The humble village of Center Point is a dry town set in the bluff country of eastern Wyoming while it was still part of the Dakota Territory. Its occupants are refugees from the Oregon Trail whose misfortunes on the trail forced them to create a community of their own.

The villagers raise an orphan boy, and when he is grown they ask him to be the Sheriff because he "is the best person they know." Thus begins the story of a young man struggling to come of age in often difficult circumstances. ................................
